Designing an animated video to raise awareness about age bias in breast cancer patients was a challenging yet rewarding project. The video aimed to explain the issue in a clear and concise manner while also being engaging and effective. One of the biggest challenges was conveying a lot of information in a short amount of time while maintaining coherence and flow.
To achieve these goals, we used graphics and animations to illustrate the points being made and present statistics on how age affects the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The video also highlighted the different experiences of older patients and the sometimes biased decisions and relationships between clinicians and their aging patients. The result was an informative and impactful video that effectively communicated the message.
The video was used in research funded by Sussex University to first identify the bias and then subsequently change the behaviour of the clinicians. Its wide-reaching impact was reported on by various national news outlets, demonstrating the power of design and animation in raising awareness and inspiring change.
